Outdoor Gear with a Conscience

Marmot has been designing top-of-the-line mountaineering equipment and camping gear since 1974, when it opened in a century-old building in Grand Junction, Colorado. The company’s driving philosophy is based on three principles: People, Product, and Planet. Marmot believes that designing progressively better products of exceptional quality and durability is the best way to reduce our overall impact on the environment. This sustainable mindset has been—and will always be—the driving force behind our product strategy. To further this belief, Marmot’s product development teams are championing innovative solutions to produce raw materials and products as cleanly, efficiently, and effectively as possible.

Here’s a list of some of Marmot’s best outdoor gear and the initiatives behind each.

Featherless Hoody

Marmot’s Featherless Hoody is as light and as warm as a 700-fill down jacket, but minus the environmental impact of down. (Though when Marmot does use down in its jackets, it’s from suppliers who comply with the company’s animal rights policies, such as not live plucking geese and ducks.)
Marmot’s Featherless technology is made of hydrophobic yarns that repel moisture and retain loft even when wet. Engineered with 3M™ Thinsulate™ Featherless Insulation, the synthetic loose-fill insulation was developed over a span of two years to create the most innovative product on the market. 3M™ has lead synthetic insulation since the 1970’s, with the launch of their Thinsulate™ products.

Women’s Coastal Short-Sleeve T-Shirt

Whether you’re pushing your limits on the trail or grabbing post-climb beers in town, the women’s Coastal Short-Sleeve T-Shirt is comfy and breathable—and it looks great. This Marmot UpCycle® T-Shirt blends recycled polyester for quick-drying performance and organic cotton for minimal heat loss.

Tungsten 2-Person Tent

Lots of products say it, but the just under 5.5-pound Tungsten 2-Person Tent truly walks the walk: it’s everything you need, and nothing you don’t. With dual doors for convenient entry and exit, ample vestibule storage space, and a footprint included, the Tungsten lightweight tent is the perfect backpacking tent for backpackers who don’t want to sacrifice all their comfort in the name of packing light. The fabrics used on the tent are PFC-free! Best of all, you can rest easy knowing that the tent was manufactured according to Marmot’s Vendor Compliance Policy, a social sustainability initiative that requires partners to pay at least minimum wage, limit overtime, prohibit child and forced labor, and apply non-discrimination policies.

Trestles Elite Eco Series

When the temperatures drop after a long day of camping and hiking, you want to rest easy under the stars (or in your tent) in comfort. We've taken our best-selling Trestles Elite Sleeping Bag series and made our most sustainable sleeping bags ever, without sacrificing up-mountain performance or durability. The Trestles Elite Eco 20 Sleeping Bag is an environmentally friendly update which features Marmot UpCycle® PFC-free and recycled shell, lining, and fill. The HL-ElixR™ Eco Micro synthetic insulation uses a unique blend of three fibers for maximum warmth, soft handfeel, and high loft. Wave construction on top and a blanket construction on the bottom provide optimal warmth and comfort. An anatomically 3D footbox and a fold-down secondary zipper offer ventilation and easy access for this mummy sleeping bag. We designed the Trestles Elite Series for treks where every ounce counts, so we kept the lightweight and easy compressibility of the original. EN rated as comfortable for women to the comfort level of approximately 32.2°F and a lower limit for men of approximately 21.6°F.
