Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best fitting midweight jacket for short guys I'm a pretty short, slim person at 5'6" 130, and the athletic fit is amazing on me. The sleeves are a little long, but the elastic cuffs solve that issue. The body is extremely well tapered without being restrictive, and it's not too long like a lot of other jackets. As for warmth, it's very good against the wind while remaining breathable, so for me it's great for anything in the 30-50 range with some wind. Above that it's probably a bit much, and below that you'll likely be wanting another layer. You will need a shell in heavy rain, but it brushes off light-moderate rain in short bursts well enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect coat for areas that hover near freezing It took me a surprisingly long time to find a coat that ticked all the boxes for me: *Zipper hand pockets *Exterior chest pocket for phone *Warm enough for temps around freezing *Comfortable hood, not oversized *Waist length I was looking for a "puffer" style jacket, but although this isn't that style, I'm not disappointed in this jacket. It's my go-to jacket for temps below 50º, and it has kept me warm in temps as low as mid twenties. If it were colder, I'd add a base layer. Very happy with this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great mid-layer The Novus hoody is a great mid-layer, perfect for spring/fall temperatures or under a shell in harsh conditions. The "brick" color is much darker than the website picture depicts, which is my only complaint because I wanted a brighter red.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cozy, Good Fit I got the small - it fits well (it doesn't balloon out at the belly and stays pretty straight along the sides of my body); I have medium-wide shoulders and a small waist. It fits perfectly under Marmot Precip (a small) as well as my TNF Softshell - put the hoods on, I feel well-protected from the elements. It's pretty similar to the Marmot Astrum (Novus is definitely a less-insulated option) which did not fit me as well. For the Astrum, I was between a medium (which was a bit poofy on me) and a small (the armpits really pinching up -- due to more fabric?) -- so, if that's an issue with the Astrum, the Novus might be good. I've pretty much worn this at every opportunity: indoors (60 degrees) and somewhat outdoors (blustery-snow, 30s), all pretty comfortably -- can't wait to take it out on a backpacking trip and feel warm for once.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Breathable I was hoping this jacket would be a functional breathable midlayer, based on the insulation type and advertising text. However, the face fabric is a standard tightly woven jacket material and is not breathable at all, which makes the breathable insulation effectively useless since you can't get any air or moisture transfer through the shell. For this piece to be functional and competitive with the other popular breathable midlayers, it needs breathable fabrics in addition to insulation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light and versatile jacket I was looking for a versatile light synthetic jacket that I could wear walking/biking around the city, hiking, camping, and backpacking, and this one is perfect. The small I got weighs in at about a pound (slightly more than advertised but nbd) and compresses to the size of a grapefruit in an internal pocket/stuff sack, which is pretty impressive for synthetic. My favorite thing about this jacket is that it's very breathable, and just the right amount of insulation for me. I wouldn't classify it as a full-on winter jacket as it's not quite as warm, but it's much warmer than a fleece. It's comfortable around 35-55F with just a t-shirt under it. With a baselayer and light fleece, I was cozy below 20F, could definitely have gone below 10F. The shell seems to be slightly water-repellent, which is nice when it's misting or snowing. Plus it's synthetic, which means it doesn't lose its insulation properties when wet, like down. Finally this fits me like a glove, there is like no excess material anywhere (I am fairly lean with long arms and a short torso, 5'7 140lbs). If you have a belly definitely size up, it's cut pretty lean. The materials are super comfortable and deal with moisture well. Overall, if it's below ~45F I'm wearing this jacket pretty much no matter what I'm doing, it's that awesome.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Happy with this shoulder season jacket I compared this against a few competitors and was really critical of fit, warmth, usefulness. I am 5'6" 150lb and typically have a hard time to decide between small and medium sizes. I'm happy with the medium on this. Among those I compared, the ARC was also a great fit but I couldn't get myself to spend almost double for it. I'm generally a warm person and deal with cold fairly well~ I'll wear shorts in Michigan in the winter if it's for just a quick run into a store. Fit, feel and details: cuffs feel nice, and the sleeves are slightly long for me which I like. I usually don't zip it quite all the way because it has a small choking effect, but the inner fabric feels nice around my neck and moves with me in the arms. One crucial point in fit is that this is long in the back, I hate when above the belt line is exposed. The jacket overall feels like lightweight/ quality material. I really like zippers on this, they feel solid and I've had no bad snags. one small detail I like on all the pockets (except inner chest) is the zipper pulls only swivel up and down. I don't trust zippers that move around in all ways because I've broken a few (such as a backpack waist pocket) and I often zip the pockets when holding anything. My head spins in the hood a little, and does so less with a beanie on. I don't think a climbing helmet would fit under it, but I would just wear a buff anyway. I belayed in it but didn't climb in it and was reasonably comfortable. Pockets are cozy for hands, with that microfiber on the back of hands. usefulness: I've used this for an overnight hike/camp and general around town use. When hiking, I had this packed in its own pocket and stowed in the outer bungee on my back and went through the little loop on the jacket stow so I'd have no worry of losing it. When hiking with a 30# pack, I was comfortable. Temps got into the upper 40's and I had to take it off. At night cooking at the camp site it got into the low 30s and I wore fleece under this which felt great. I did get sprinkled on and it beaded off for a little while but if this was waterproofed it would be amazing. Around town, I've been trying to push the lower limits of this jacket. I wore it one night with just a t-shirt under and it was upper 20's. I was pretty cold I couldn't last more than 20 minutes or so. I'm comfortable driving in this and it doesn't ride up that bad when sitting. Since it is so lightweight, you can feel heavier pocketed items really weighing down on the jacket, and I do worry about my keys cutting the inside but it hasn't happened. In conclusion and without talking about the other jackets, this jacket is the best combination of comfort and use for a guy who wants to have very few jackets and not mess around much with layers. Also I feel like a million bucks in it and have yet to see someone else in it. Whew this is long, if only I got paid/ free product to do reviews...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice coat! Pretty good water repellent qualities but I wouldn't wear it in a downpour. Hoodie covers my head well. I like how high the zipper goes and works with the collar to protect the face. Sleeves are long but I am sure it's a nice feature if you are out in the country with gloves on. Very warm coat. Great pockets. Inside pocket is very deep. This coat (or maybe it's me) can pick up static very easily. I get shocked every time I take it off.
